EZ Sign Story #11: The Little Magic Around the House: Expanding EZ Sign Beyond the Workplace

In the previous episode, I shared how our Japan and China engineering teams worked together to completely overhaul the EZ Sign apps. We rebuilt the core system, improved the editing and saving experience, and added QR code generation.

The result was a much more intuitive EZ Sign experience.

But something unexpected happened.

As EZ Sign became easier to use, our customers began showing us entirely new ways to use EZ Sign.

We initially saw EZ Sign as a digital name badge. Our customers saw something much bigger.

In this episode, I’ll share how EZ Sign expanded from name badges into retail stores, offices, factories, and even enterprise infrastructure for global technology companies.

1. Retail & Food Service

Some of the strongest early reactions to EZ Sign came from independent shops, restaurants, and brick-and-mortar retailers.

The reason was simple: physical stores constantly need to change what they display.

Prices, promotions, seasonal menus, and product information are constantly changing. Traditionally, staff have to print, cut, laminate, and replace signs every time something changes.

The problem isn't just the cost of printing.
It's also the time, labor, paper, and plastic waste generated every time information needs to be updated.

EZ Sign requires no batteries or wiring. Staff can simply update the information on a smartphone and tap the device with their phone.

Then customers began showing us uses we hadn't originally imagined.

They used EZ Sign to display labels inside cases where there was no convenient power outlet. Some attached EZ Sign directly to wine bottles to display tasting notes. Restaurants used the gold-frame model on tables for messages such as “Reserved” and Wi-Fi information.

These examples made us realize that EZ Sign could be more than a digital display.

It could be a simple, practical replacement for the paper signs that businesses print, replace, and throw away every day.

And that opened up an entirely new way of thinking about the product: not just as a display, but as a tool for reducing everyday workload, operating costs, and waste.

2. The Modern Office: “Micro-Space DX”

We soon began receiving more inquiries from the office DX market.

When people hear “digital transformation,” they often think of large LCD screens and large-scale systems. These solutions can be powerful, but they also require wiring, electricity, installation, and ongoing maintenance.

EZ Sign offered a different approach.

We called it “Micro-Space DX.”

Instead of digitizing an entire space, why not digitize the small spaces people interact with every day—desks, doors, name badges, meeting rooms, and reception areas?

We began receiving inquiries about smart visitor badges for exhibitions, office receptions, hospitals, and senior care facilities.

Instead of disposable paper or sticker badges, EZ Sign could display a visitor's name, destination, company, photo, and even a Wi-Fi QR code.

When the visitor leaves, the device can simply be collected, reset, and reused.

The same concept works for employee name badges in hotels and department stores. Photos, Japanese, English, Chinese, and company logos can all be displayed and updated without having to order a new badge.

One Device. Many Possibilities.
Visitor badges · Employee name badges · Desk signs · Meeting room signs

We also began seeing potential for simple desktop status signs such as “Away,” “Focus Mode,” and “In an Online Meeting.”

The idea was simple:

You don't always need a large digital system to make a small space smarter.

Sometimes, all you need is one small, reusable display.

3. Manufacturing & Factories

Another major market soon emerged: manufacturing plants and logistics warehouses.

Even highly automated factories still rely heavily on paper for shelf labels, material management, production instructions, and process management.

Existing electronic shelf labels can help solve this problem, but many require Wi-Fi and batteries. When thousands of devices are installed, charging and battery replacement can quickly become a major operational burden.

No Power. No Wi-Fi. No Battery Replacement.

EZ Sign can be updated simply by tapping a production-management handheld terminal against the device.

EZ Sign application

Our Zhuhai manufacturing team also has extensive experience producing medical equipment and cockpit displays for aircraft used in the United States. This strict quality-control environment helped us establish rigorous reliability testing for EZ Sign.

The hardware achieved IP65-equivalent dust and water resistance, making it suitable for dusty factory racks, moisture-prone back-of-house areas, and warehouse environments.

Battery-Free Information Infrastructure
EZ Sign can provide low-maintenance digital information in environments where installing power or maintaining batteries isn't practical.

4. Global Tech & Enterprise Opportunities

As EZ Sign expanded into stores, offices, and factories, we began receiving another kind of inquiry—from global technology companies.

One major technology company, which we'll refer to as “Company B,” discovered EZ Sign through our direct-to-consumer website.

They were interested in connecting the NFC chip's unique UID directly to their internal systems and attendance database.

The concept was simple:
  1. Tap EZ Sign at an NFC reader.
  2. Identify the person using the unique UID.
  3. Open or close the gate.
  4. Update the person's attendance status.

At this point, EZ Sign had moved beyond being simply a convenient digital name badge.

It had the potential to become an IoT device integrated with enterprise security and internal systems.

Then came another unexpected inquiry.

“Company E,” a major U.S.-based visitor and access management provider used around the world, asked us a simple question:

“Can all paper and sticker visitor badges be replaced with EZ Sign?”

I immediately understood the idea.

At many companies in Europe and the United States, visitors check in at a reception kiosk, enter their information, have their photo taken, and receive a disposable sticker badge.

But what if that disposable sticker could become a reusable digital badge?

Imagine replacing a piece of paper or a sticker with an ultra-thin e-paper display that can be used again and again.

As a CEO and developer, I found the possibility incredibly exciting.

The more ideas we received from customers, the more possibilities we began to see.

With our teams in Japan, China, and the United States working together, we started to see an opportunity to do something much bigger:

replace paper-based information displays with reusable digital displays on a global scale.

And perhaps that was the biggest lesson of all.

The more we listened to our customers, the more possibilities we discovered.

5. Taking EZ Sign to the Next Stage

After years of professional use, testing, and refinement, EZ Sign reached another major milestone.

50,000+
Cumulative Shipments in Japan and the United States
(as of the end of August 2026)
~5,000 / month
Monthly sales

We developed a new 2.13-inch model and began working on the next-generation 7.5-inch model.

Full-scale sales in China and cross-border e-commerce were also getting underway, while our production structure was already prepared for further expansion.

But just as we thought we had a clear picture of where EZ Sign was heading, another question emerged:

“What could I actually use this for at home?”

We had spent years developing EZ Sign for businesses.

It was durable, elegant, battery-free, and designed for professional environments.

But perhaps those same strengths could solve problems in everyday life, too.

What small problems could EZ Sign solve at home?

What everyday situations could become easier with a small digital display?

And that became our next challenge.

Could something we originally designed for businesses become useful in everyday life?
